Green Ghana Project
Friday, 11th June 2021, the National Coordinator of the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Programme (GASIP), Mr. Klutse Kudomor planted a tree at the forecourt of the MOFA Project Office to commemorate the “Green Ghana Day", a day that has been set aside to plant some five million trees across Ghana. The event was joined by the Project Coordinator of GCAP, Mr. Osei Owusu-Agyeman, Director for Animal Production Directorate and the M&E Specialist for Outgrower and Value Chain Fund, Mr. Micheal Kpormegbe.
As an agricultural value chain Programme, tree planting plays a vital role in contributing to solving the impacts of climate change:
- Planting trees is one of the biggest and cheapest ways of creating a carbon sink in tackling the climate crisis.
- Agroforestry can stabilize land from erosion or natural disasters, improve soil health and groundwater recharge, and provide economic development for nearby communities.
- Forests also provide vital habitat for animals and ecological services for humans, such as purifying the air we breathe and regulating local temperatures.
As a national exercise, the event also took place at various GASIP partnering Districts where over 20, 000 seedlings of various tree species were planted by all GASIP beneficiaries.
The event was used to admonish all farmers, not to only commemorate the day, but to do more beyond the planting, by watering and catering for the seedlings till they mature.
The cropping season in the north has started. Land preparation is at its peak. Where appropriate, practice zero or minimum tillage, to reduce incidences of erosion and also save cost.
